DIY Jewelry That WOWS: Easy Cabochon Necklace & Earrings Tutorial

Curious about making your own jewelry but not sure where to begin? This project is the perfect blend of easy techniques, customizable results, and that sweet sense of โ€œOMG I made this myself!โ€. In this tutorial, Iโ€™ll walk you through how to make a beautiful necklace and earring set using glass cabochons, a fun dipping technique, and a few simple materials.

โœจ Spoiler: No two pieces ever turn out the same. And thatโ€™s the magic.

What Youโ€™ll Need to Make the Magic Happen

Hereโ€™s everything I used to make this custom jewelry set – no fancy tools, just the good stuff:

Jewelry Components:
โ€“ 1 teardrop pendant tray
โ€“ 2 small round earring trays
โ€“ 1 teardrop glass cabochon
โ€“ 2 small round glass cabochons
โ€“ 22-inch silver chain

Paint Colors:
โ€“ Silver Morning
โ€“ Spun Gold
โ€“ White
โ€“ Crystal

Tools & Extras:
โ€“ Paper towels
โ€“ Plastic plate (aka our swirl canvas)
โ€“ Kneadable eraser (or sticky tack)
โ€“ Rubbing alcohol
โ€“ Toothpicks
โ€“ Q-tips
โ€“ Wood skewers
โ€“ Wet rag
โ€“ Face mask & gloves (safety first!)
โ€“ E6000 glue (a tiny drop goes a long way)

What Is a Cabochon, Anyway?

Cabochons (pronounced cab-uh-shawn, in case you were wondering) are smooth, domed pieces of glass with a flat back. Unlike faceted gemstones, they donโ€™t have cuts or angles – just a polished surface that magnifies whateverโ€™s underneath. Basically, theyโ€™re the little glassy heroes of this project.

Prepping the Cabochons

First, we mount the cabochons curved side down onto a ball of kneadable eraser (or sticky tack). This lets us work on the flat side without them rolling away like rebellious little beads. Once that’s done, before we start dipping, give the cabochons a quick wipe with rubbing alcohol to remove any fingerprints or oils. Trust me – this helps the paint actually stick to the glass.

Time to Swirl Some Paint!

This is where the real fun begins. On a plastic plate, squeeze blobs, swirls, and lines of your four paints all over the surface.

Then, take a toothpick and swirl the colors together – but donโ€™t overmix! You want a beautiful marbled pattern, not a murky mess.

Dipping the Cabochons

Dip each cabochon lightly into the surface of the paint – just a kiss, not a cannonball. The goal is to pick up that gorgeous swirl without disturbing it. IHC Quick Tip: One paint swirl plate can usually cover several cabochons, and no two will ever look the same. Donโ€™t let that gorgeous paint go to waste – dip a few more while itโ€™s fresh.

Drying Time

Let the dipped cabochons dry fully for 3 – 4 days. Brutal, I know – but skip it and youโ€™ll regret it.

Clean-Up & Assembly

Once dry, use a damp Q-tip to gently wipe away any paint that made its way to the sides or front. Then, strap on your safety gear (face mask + gloves) and glue each cabochon into its tray using a tiny dot of E6000. Less is more here – unless you enjoy picking glue out of crevices for hours. Let everything cure for 24 hours.

Final Touches

Once the glue is fully cured, slide the pendant onto the chain and pop rubber backs onto the earrings. Thatโ€™s itโ€”your custom jewelry set is ready to wear. And honestly? It turned out gorgeous.

Why I Love This Project

  • Totally customizable. Choose any color palette you like.
  • No two pieces are the same. Youโ€™ll never recreate the same swirl twice.
  • Ideal for handmade gifts, market booths, or elevating your everyday look.

You can even adapt the process to make keychains, magnets, or other jewelry. Cabochons come in tons of shapesโ€”rounds, squares, ovals, rectanglesโ€”you name it!
