Are you ready to get crafty and celebrate a little Harry Potter magic? Well, you’re in the right place because today, I’m going to show you how I created an adorable dot-painted owl, inspired by none other than Hedwig herself!
Why an owl, you ask? Because it’s Harry Potter’s birthday at the end of July! 🎉 Mark it on your calendar—July 31st, the Boy Who Lived is turning… well, let’s just say he’s ageless, just like our love for the wizarding world. Let’s create a little magical piece in honor of Harry’s loyal sidekick! Grab all your stuff & let’s get crafty.
Materials You’ll Need:
- 3 ½ inch hand-poured artstone (or any stone you like)
- Matte varnish
- Acrylic paint: warm beige, white, bright yellow, ebony black, slate gray, bright orange
- Dotting tools
- A cute owl stencil (I got mine from Dollar Tree!)
- Paint palette or pods
- Paintbrush
- Cup of water
- Wet rag
- Q-tips and toothpicks

Prepping the Stone
We start with the base coat. I used slate gray paint to cover the stone in two thin coats. Once dry, I added two thin coats of matte varnish for a smooth finish. After that, it’s time to trace our adorable little owl with a chalk pencil. Be sure to use a light hand here—chalk can be tricky to erase later on!

Dotting Hedwig’s Outline
Hedwig is famous for her snow-white feathers, so let’s get dotting! Using white paint and my trusty 0.8mm stylus, I slowly dotted around the owl’s outline. Consistency is key here, so I made sure each dot was even in size by controlling the amount of paint on my stylus and being careful with the pressure.
PRO TIP: The size of your dots depends on two things: how much paint you have on your tool and the pressure you apply. More paint and harder pressure will create larger dots, while a light touch creates small ones.

Working on the Eyes
Hedwig’s soulful eyes are the focal point of this design, and I wanted them to be big, bold, and black. I used a new silicone angled brush (from Dollarama!) to carefully paint in the eyes. After rounding out the edges with a dotting tool, I moved on to the beak. But wait—what’s this? Hedwig’s beak shouldn’t be orange—it’s black! No worries, though, a trusty Q-tip fixed my little slip-up, and I was back on track.

Filling in Hedwig’s Body and Details
Next up are the feet and wings. Using white paint, I dotted her feet and added black accent dots for her talons. For the beak, I used black paint this time (lesson learned!) and then highlighted the wings with black dots. Finally, I outlined her eyes with a striking bright yellow paint, giving Hedwig that piercing owl stare we all know and love.

Creating the Background
Now it’s time to focus on the background. We used slate gray for the base coat, but I wanted more texture and depth. I mixed in some black paint to create a darker gray and dotted around the owl, one side at a time. This gives the design an extra pop, ensuring Hedwig is the star of the show.

Final Touches
The finishing touch? A single, perfect black dot in the center of each eye, bringing Hedwig to life. At this point, I could almost see her flying off to deliver a letter to Harry! With all the tiny details filled in and the background dots complete, this little owl was ready for the final coat of varnish.
